Cheap tasty treats in Manila

In Manila you can find a mixed cuisine which traces back into the history of the region. You will find here Spanish, Mexican, Malay, Chinese or Japanese cuisines. Filipino cuisine has a combination of sweet, salty, saour and spicy flavours.

Main dishes are sinigang (pork shrimp or fish in tamarind soup), kaldereta (beef/goat in tomato sauce), fried or grilled chicken or fish, kare-kare (oxtail in peanut sauce), mechado (pork in tomato sauce), pochero (pork or beef cooked in tomato sauce with bananas), bulalo (soup with beef and vegetables), . The popular desserts are leche flan, buko pandan (young coconut with cream) . For some dishes, Filipino chefs use vinegar.

You can come across Filipinos who eat the traditional way, using their hands especially dry dishes such as inihaw or prito: take a bite from the main dish then make a rice ball with the hands to accompany it.

In Filipino celebrations, lechón (roasted suckling pig) serves as the centerpiece of the dinner table. It is served with a “sarsa” (sauce) made from mashed pork liver, sugar, spices and starch.
