Christmas has become a special time of the year for Prague, and its Christmas markets are a main ingredient in the festive magic. This huge, seasonal celebration brings locals and visitors together in order to share the spirit of the holiday in a true Christmas setting.
There are a few markets that are set up for Christmas in Prague. The main two are the ones at Wenceslas Square and the Old Town Square. There are also a couple small ones at Havelske Trziste and Namesti Republiky.
At the Prague Christmas markets, everyone can enjoy the brightly decorated rows of wooden huts that sell Czech handicrafts, as well as some interesting stocking fillers, like glass, scented candles, wooden toys, hand-made jewelry, and tree ornaments. A big thing that they always sell at the Christmas markets are puppets, which are always very popular. Warm drinks, and hot food, like sausages, cob, and speciali
ties that are locally made can also be bought at the markets. Shopping outdoors brings a lot of fun to people of all ages, and it becomes easier while drinking a hot cup of wine.
Shopping isn’t the only thing to do at the Christmas markets though. In the Old Town Square, visitors and locals can enjoy the mini zoo, where children can ride on ponies, as well as pet goats, lamas, and sheep. Next to the mini zoo is a manger scene of Bethlehem, which shows Joseph, Mary, the three kings, and, of course, baby Jesus. However, the most impressive thing of all is their Christmas tree, which is draped with lights.
If you want to do your Christmas shopping in Prague this year, it’s good to know that in December you can find really cheap hotels there, starting from as little as £11pppn.
