Athens as an affordable tourist destination

The seeds of Western Civilization were first sown in Athens and luckily, generations after generations could still see some of the structures where the philosophers discussed on a variety subjects while writers started on their masterpieces. The Parthenon and Acropolis still holds most of its beauty and reminiscence of the past. But Athens could be very expensive if you are not familiar with the place.

The first thing you should know is that Athens uses Greek as their official language. It will confuse you and you can easily get lost. That is why it is better to invest in a tour guide rather getting lost for a few times and spending most of your funds in transportation. If you really want to go places alone, just walk.

With regards to accommodation, almost any hotel in Athens is relatively expensive. If you are traveling alone, settle for a hostel which is very popular in Europe. For less than $100 a night, you could have a good night sleep. Minimal comfort is offered but you are not there in Athens to sleep anyway.

You may also want to avoid crowds if you want to experience Greek civilization up close. Visit the place during September since during this time, travellers are starting to pack their things and go home. You don’t need to worry about tickets since the tour operators and hotels could get a ticket for you wherein you can access all sites without additional fee. Small museums are not covered by the ticket.
