When travelling in France there is a lot that you can do to save money.
First of all, consider staying in a small town instead of a big city. A small little town in France is going to have cheaper lodging than – say – Paris. For example in Lourdes, we found Hotel Saint Etienne which will charge you eur 18.50.
If you do have to stay in a big city (some people just have to stay in Paris when they go to France), then try to downgrade a bit. The French star rating system for their hotels is a good one. So, let’s say that you love to stay at four star hotels. Well, then you may not feel too bad to stay in a three-star hotel with almost the same comfortable amenities.
When visiting France for weeks at a time it could be better to rent out a vacation home instead of a hotel. Overall, you will pay a lot less than you would for a hotel in the same length of time, but you will have your own kitchen and will save money on meals. It’s kind of fun, because you will be living more like a local!

The smaller towns are recommended, indeed. Thus you make sure you will find a place in a hostel or an hotel during the rush holiday hour in the summer.
For example you need to be very lucky to find a place in a hostel if you call from the Eurolines coach station in Eastern Paris to any hostel generously advertised in the area. If you don’t book in advance your place in the hostel you risk to spend the night in the open, as the coach/train/tube stations will be closed and night trains are rare gems.
You mention Lourdes in your article – I have never been there, but I am sure it is a charming place. Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage to the grotto and the church mainly, but I am sure it offers a lot for every visitor.
