Nagykata is one of the best kept secrets of Hungary. Located in the central north area of country, you can reach the center of Nagykata in less than an hour from Budapest. But even with this convenient location, the town doesn’t attract a lot of tourists mainly because it was overshadowed by the capital.
But if you do end up in Budapest in the first week of April, visit Nagykata for a day or two to experience the town’s best. Every first week of April, the town is transformed into a festive area wherein you can easily enjoy the local food and wine.
You don’t even have to spend more than a hundred dollars when you stay there for only two days. There are relatively affordable hostels that will give you the necessary comfort for a good night’s sleep.
During the day, you can be part of the festive celebration. Every April, the town celebrates the Wine Vintage Festival wherein they offer good food and great wine. April is the harvest season in Nagykata and the people see it fit that they celebrate this as part of their thanksgiving.
The food that you will enjoy in Nagykata will not cost more than $4.00. This festival food will consist of their local wine combined with freshly boiled potatoes, bread and meat. The festival lasts for a day but celebrations starts the day before.
Nagykata is also one of the most picturesque towns in Hungary. Go around the villages and you’ll see acres of vegetables growing everywhere. It’s a classic agricultural village that is proud of their products and they willingly share their harvest to their visitors.
