Travelling Cheap

Sarajevo could be considered a well kept secret of Europe. There is a misconception that Sarajevo is still a war-ravaged city where war could erupt anytime. Sarajevo is slowly rebuilding the city and the people love the improvement. That could be the reason for their general hospitality wherever you go.

The only tricky part in Sarajevo is on how to get to the centre of the city from the airport. Taxis in the airport could be a bit expensive even though the city centre is very near. Every tourist is highly recommended to visit the city centre since the most of the interesting places in Sarajevo are there. A good alternative to reach the city centre is to take short ride in the taxi to the tram.

Once you get to the city centre, everything else should be affordable (hostel prices start from EUR 8.50). Accommodation is very cheap here since you can also find a good family that offers rooms to rent. Although the amenities are not that impressive, you should be comfortable enough to enjoy your stay there.

Tours are common in Sarajevo and you can request to join one of them through your hotel or through the tourist centre. One that you should never miss is the tolerance tour where you’ll be taken to different museums (Tunnel Museum, National Historical Museum) and interesting sites (location of the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand).

Food is never a problem here. Visit Bascarsija for their market wherein they sell fresh fruits. Restaurants that serve local food are also here. While you’re there, visit other historical sites in Bascarsija or you can enjoy the view while you eat.
