Living in London is expensive enough without travelling
around the UK. And sure there are plenty of beautiful sites in London that people from all over the world travel to see. But sometimes the stress, the noise and the tourists all get a bit too much. However, train fare can sometimes be prohibitively expensive.
That is the reason I find National Express Funfare tickets so appealing. London is surrounded by lovely towns and cities with rich histories and a plethora of castles, cathedrals and museums that are no more than 2-3 hours away by bus. But what appeals to me the most, as always, is the price. The National Express offers tickets from just £1, good competition for the likes of Megabus. In comparison to this budget bus service National Express buses offer relative luxury. That is not to say that you will have champagne served to you on the way, but the seats are more comfortable, with more leg space and in general they are newer and better up kept.
For longer journeys the bus will put an ache in your neck, however if you are intent on seeing a band play in a more intimate venue up north and have paid through the nose for the ticket, you might as well save on your travel. Getting a ticket for £1 means that you can probably afford to stay in a hotel for the night and spend the day walking around whatever city you have ended up in before hopping back on the bus and heading back.
The funfares are ideal for summer weekend getaways or same day travel. Most of the beaches are within two hours of London and bus prices are by far cheaper than the train. That’s how I’m going to Brighton, with my book and suntan cream. Maybe a small cooler with beer as well.
